EU project day: Brexit
On Monday, May 22nd, 2017, our school hosted its annual EU project day. This year ? thanks to last year?s events ? the topic was the Brexit or British Exit. The term refers to an in/out referendum on whether to leave the European Union. Of course, as we all know now, the United Kingdom ? a place whose very name is starting to sound a bit sarcastic after this event ? voted to leave the EU. So we discussed Britain?s destabilizing decision in school. The first thing we did was to vote on whether or not we even knew what the Brexit was (it was split between ?Yes? and ?Maybe?). After that we moved on to reading about the specifics of the Brexit and the UK?s situation in groups of four. We looked at different newspaper articles on the Brexit vote and discussed their positions and stylistic choices (picture, headline, etc.). We also examined British parties and their opinions on the Brexit. To conclude the English part of our project, we watched a segment of the hilarious HBO show ?Last Week Tonight with John Oliver? on the Brexit and the choice the UK had to face. After that, we talked about the EU itself and then moved on to discussing Britain?s choice and ramifications for the EU and its members. We learned for example that some other EU countries are thinking about leaving the Union. During the final part of this project, all 10th graders gathered in our school?s music hall in order to meet the former Minister of State for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office, Günter Gloser. He talked about the Brexit and the EU in general and then moved on to answering and discussing our burning questions. We concluded the day with a fiery debate on the European Union. Overall, I think this was a fun project.
